'Animal Farm' Digital Painting for ImagineFX! by ChrisOatley 'Animal Farm' Digital Painting for ImagineFX! by ChrisOatley
Here's a new painting I did for this month's issue of ImagineFX Magazine.

It's the first personal work I've done in over a year!

They did a story about The Oatley Academy for the print and iPad versions of the magazine and interviewed me for a story on the ImagineFX blog.

I will be launching a new Digital Painting Workshop that covers the entire process for creating this painting in April. It's called "Animals, Atmosphere and How Not To Kill Your Painting."

You can get the details about the workshop and the links to the interview here: [link]

One of my favorite things about this piece is that I knew instantly what it was even before I saw the title. Anyone who's read Animal Farm would recognize it.

I also love the use of desaturated color--I think that really helps establish the atmosphere of the piece. :)

The more you look, the more you see in works like this. I could probably stare at it for a solid ten minutes and still notice new things.

I really dig how you've blended the very graphic element of the eyes with the more traditional look and feel of the rest of it.

And I'm really glad you shared it on DA as strangely, I hadn't seen it yet, despite following you in various other forms.

Thanks! Yes, I've been obsessed with the whole graphic/ rendered blend. I have been for as long as I can remember. I think maybe it was Klimt who got me going down that path...

It's something that I've sort of seen as a roadblock (or an excuse) for a long time now as I am very fond of both ideals.

The first thing I thought of when I saw those eyes was that it was like you'd taken the best bits of Frank Miller's Batman language and transplanted it into something more Disney, creating the best of both world's. But keeping in mind how much respect Klimt helps understand that marriage a lot better.

Great for you and your efforts to be featured on ImagineFX. I am enjoying the podcast as much as ever, especially with the recent interviews with Justin Copeland and Ryan Woodward. To see the work of teachers always encourages me to keep striving for more development.

Thank you!

I love dogs AND chickens. My wife and I REALLY want to have chickens. We don't have space for them yet but it's my dream to have chickens, a goat and a horse or two!

Aw, yeah, they're really awesome! ^^ (Chickens are SO cute! They sneeze, and take dust baths in the dust, and like to snuggle, and crow even when it ISN'T five in the morning! XD Both of ours are crowing right now, actually! :XD: ) But I hope you get some, eventually! ^^ Aw, man, I wish I had a horse, and maybe a sheep or something, too! :3
