When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.

Recently, I discovered that old episodes of He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe can be viewed for free on hulu.com. While watching the old episodes, I got really inspired. I started thinking about Skeletor. I mean, the guy has a floating skull instead of a head, an outfit festooned with bones, a giant alien-rams-head-staff and a grim-reaper-style hood and yet he is a complete buffoon. He is not the least bit scary. He is a walking contradiction. A joke. Judging from his design, he SHOULD be utterly terrifying. But then he opens his stupid mouth. Anyway, I still love him. And I always will. So I decided to attempt to paint a genuinely scary version of Skeletor. And here it is. I think I succeeded. But Im interested in your opinions. Head to ChrisOatley.com to see the sketch for this painting. [link] Want more 80s pop culture with a realistic twist? Check out my painting of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! [link] |

is sorta like the opposite of this...
Very skilled he is, but yet his designs don't look as... solid...

Energy and forever.
There's something about the color palette and light that makes you focus more on the mood of the piece than on the technical aspects of it. I did the drawing on Christmas day just-for-fun. I didn't have any reference or any pre-planning. I just sat down and drew it with my little portable WACOM tablet on my laptop. I finished the painting later. Sometimes you just need to finish something - that sense of accomplishment - to keep moving with other projects.
